Lydia The Tattooed Lady.
The very song that stopped the Stock Market in the 1950's
OK all you great SpinQuad Ninjas here is the first of many special mini-challenges we have lined up for you. These new challenges are designed to help people have fun, to learn, and most importantly to share knowledge. The reward will be praise and acknowledgement of your achievement in our community but more importantly hopefully in learning another new tip, trick or skill that will advance you in both your career and your personal life.
Oh and I guess we can sweeten the pot a bit, the winner will get his/her choice of any of KURV Studios wonderful Training DVD's (www.kurvstudios.com/)!
So here’s the first challenge, 'Lydia The Tattooed Lady'! This is a surfacing challenge folks nothing more nothing less. Below you will find the lyrics to the song 'Lydia The Tattooed Lady'. Around noon tomorrow I will post a thread with a link to a zipped file which contains the female object, modeled by our own Proton, and an extremely simple scene to render her in.
The challenge is to surface the model in such a way that she would be set and ready to use (surfacing wise) for a feature music video with this song. She needs to show the characteristics described in the song. The interpretation of the song and her features is all up to you. We are looking for the most accurate tattoo design to the song...so random tattoos might look cool but we are hoping to get the song tattoos.
The challenge starts now and will run through midnight November 24th. Right now you are in your research phase. The setup files will be announced and released later this week so please stay tuned for that announcement.
RULES:
- No changes to the geometry of the model nor to the basic setup of the scene are permitted.
- When rendering you must use the provided lighting and camera position(s), there are mirrors setup so you can see object from all sides.
- If you so desire to add hair via something like node displacement, saslite, sas or whatever (No new physical geometry)so be it but adding hair will not give nor take points from the judging, unless you add new geometry.
- Nodes from LW9 are open game.
- Displacement mapping as part of the surfacing is open game (although I'm not sure why you would use them.)
- Any third party paint tool is open game as long as she is rendered with the provided scene.
- Post processing the image is permissible but only to the extent of cleaning up an image and providing a 'simple' background with credits to you and your work.
- No changes to camera settings are permitted, meaning people with LW9 or above must still use the camera settings in the scene. This is to accommodate pre LW8.5 users.
- Each thread entry must start with ‘Lydia: ‘
- Showing wip in progress (WIP) images are a must! Chatting and helping others in the challenge is a must!
- Final submission will include a render using camera 1 at keyframe 0 and keyframe 60 using the default settings (you may change render thread number), you may include an additional post processed image along with the native render (details below on post processing).
- In addition since these challenges are designed to help people learn and grow we are asking for a zipped file of the your setup to share with others so that we all may learn and grow. The object and scene are freely given to you use for this challenge so too are the techniques you use are freely given to help teach others. Trust me in future mini-challenges this sharing will be a major benefit to everybody!
- Surfaces. You are allowed to single out certain regions of polygons and assign new surfaces to those regions.
- Vertex maps. Creating your own Vertex maps including Color Vmaps, Weight Maps, UV Maps are permissible and even encouraged.
You may add cloths, shoes, accessories but they MUST be part of the textures, no new geometry! For example the feet have no toes. While this may be due to amputation(maybe infection from a bad needle?) but we suggest textureing her with shoes.
Cleaning up using PhotoShop or whatever you choose is permitted for changes to Levels, Contrast & Brightness, Hue & Saturation and Sharpening. You may add personal credits. Post work will neither add nor subtract from the judging. If you do add post work you must include the unretouched raw render along with the final submission render.
The reasons for these rules are simple, this is a surfacing challenge the only thing we want you guys to concentrate on is surfacing.
FINAL SUBMISSION:
- The challenge will end midnight November 24th. (More information on posting final submission are to follow.)
- Prior to your final submission you must show WIP's and try to explain your process especially if questioned about certain points.
- For final submission you must use only keyframe 0 and keyframe 60 on camera 1 for the final submitted render!
- You must use the default scene, light, and camera setup for your final submission. (Sorry no FPrime for this challenge!)
- You must provide your final scene setup and if you created great presets you should share those as well. Remember these challenges are teaching/learning sessions!
JUDGING:
Folks judging will be provided in a quick and decisive manner and will be solely based upon the surfacing of the model nothing more. The break down for the judging is as follows.
40 pts - How well the surfacing represents the song
40 pts - The quality of surfacing
20 pts – Sharing. As in sharing surfacing knowledge and presets in your threads and addition of your final model for download.
- minus 10 points for modifying geometry
- minus 10 points for modifying the scene setup
For a total of 100 pts. In case of ties in points extra wait will be given to extreme creativity in betrayal of surfacing in regards to the lyrics!
PRIZES:
- The winner will have his/her selection of any KURV studios Training DVD (www.kurvstudios.com/)!

*** Lydia The Tattooed Lady ***
(Music by Harold Arlen. Lyrics by E.Y. Harburg.)
Oh Lydia, oh Lydia, say, have you met Lydia?
Lydia The Tattooed Lady.
She has eyes that folks adore so,
and a torso even more so.
Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia.
Oh Lydia The Queen of Tattoo.
On her back is The Battle of Waterloo.
Beside it, The Wreck of the Hesperus too.
And proudly above waves the red, white, and blue.
You can learn a lot from Lydia!
La-la-la...la-la-la.
La-la-la...la-la-la.
When her robe is unfurled she will show you the world,
if you step up and tell her where.
For a dime you can see Kankakee or Paree,
or Washington crossing The Delaware.
La-la-la...la-la-la.
La-la-la...la-la-la.
Oh Lydia, oh Lydia, say, have you met Lydia?
Lydia The Tattooed Lady.
When her muscles start relaxin',
up the hill comes Andrew Jackson.
Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia.
Oh Lydia The Queen of them all.
For two bits she will do a mazurka in jazz,
with a view of Niagara that nobody has.
And on a clear day you can see Alcatraz.
You can learn a lot from Lydia!
La-la-la...la-la-la.
La-la-la...la-la-la.
Come along and see Buffalo Bill with his lasso.
Just a little classic by Mendel Picasso.
Here is Captain Spaulding exploring the Amazon.
Here's Godiva, but with her pajamas on.
La-la-la...la-la-la.
La-la-la...la-la-la.
Here is Grover Whelan unveilin' The Trilon.
Over on the west coast we have Treasure Isle-on.
Here's Nijinsky a-doin' the rhumba.
Here's her social security numba.
La-la-la...la-la-la.
La-la-la...la-la-la.
Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia.
Oh Lydia The Champ of them all.
She once swept an Admiral clear off his feet.
The ships on her hips made his heart skip a beat.
And now the old boy's in command of the fleet,
for he went and married Lydia!
I said Lydia...
(He said Lydia...)
They said Lydia...
We said Lydia, la, la!
