Designing the pre-0090 Autitons (TM) WIP

OK, it's time to start designing and modeling the pre-0090 Autitons (TM).

So far I've been using this simple placeholder stand-in for the pre-0090 Autitons in my previous Instance Generator Lattice WIP thread.

Here's the simple placeholder I've been using... (impressive hunh? ;-)

What the heck is a pre-0090 Autiton? Well, Autitons (TM) are object-oriented software automatons. They are endlessly created in the vast Instance Generator Lattice. The Autiton units being produced are just simple utility Autitons until a disruption causes the creation of anomalous unit 0090 (TM). So the pre-0090 Autitons are the simpler utility units. 0090 is a more advanced, but rather mixed up unit. I actually designed the 0090 unit first in his own WIP thread (and the 0090 finished thread) since he's the main character of the series The Autiton Archives. I'll now be going back to design the pre-0090 Autitons in this WIP thread, working backwards from the 0090 design. As always, I'll first do the design & modeling in modo and then do the texturing and rigging in LightWave 9.6.

    Here's the current 0090 rig...

    Hang on, here we go...

Haha That rig makes my eyes bleed
Good luck with this project. You'll have to try and make some surfaces which don't melt your computer, as you're going to have to have a lot of them!

    Thanks Tobian!

Luckily the pre-0090 Autitons will be the simpler units, especially since there will be over a million instances of them walking around in the Instance Generator Lattice.

Here's the very first step of putting on a new face... starting from the sphere...

Here's another step in the design of the pre-0090 Autiton's face. I'm aiming to have their faces be composed of simple synthetic looking masks. With a hint of 0090's face, but simpler, more generic and non-animated. Only the eye balls will be animated. Something along the lines of a simple theater mask.

    Thanks Shuggs!

I've been doing all my modeling in modo for a few years now. I used to do my modeling in Form-Z and switched to modo when 1.01 came out. I'm looking forward to seeing what LW CORE can do. If it has a new GUI and fully interactive tools to match or beat modo, I'd love to switch to do everything in LW which would make things even more streamlined.

    Scazzino-

wow this would have been great as a tutorial walk through, but hey I am still waiting for your book to show up.

I see that your in Modo again doing your magic. I wish that you would do what Jonny Gordon did but create yours as a DVD tutorial, man that would go over big in the 3D world here.

I'll keep that in mind (video tutorials) for something I might do after the book...

Here's an update with the body (made from the initial teardrop stand-in)... hands and feet coming up...

Cool work so far! Not too sure about the hands, they might be a bit TOO simple, and not sure about the mouth too. Beautifully and cleanly modelled though!

    Thanks Tobian!

    Good points.

The "hands" are really just pincer claws, inspired by one of my favorite robots of all time, the Lost in Space robot...

The face isn't going to be animated, it'll be a blank face, along the lines of a simple theater mask. The mouth and eyes are just non-moving openings like in the theater masks.

So far it's actually the feet that I wasn't too sure about... do they bother you at all?

Here's another update of the pre-0090 model.

I've tweaked the pincers a bit and reworked the feet to give a little feel of treads, also reminiscent of the Lost in Space robot - B9

    Thanks Dare!

My plate's pretty well overflowing at the moment... I've got to finish the book and the pilot first... then catch up on some client work (to pay some bills)... then catch up on some rest... then I'll think about some video tutes...

This still has a way to go, but here's an initial render test with some preliminary textures...
