Michael Sormann started his career as a freelance artist then made the move to computer game artist. Shortly afterwards he moved to Vienna to work for Neo Software and for five years was their lead artist. Now a freelance artist he makes time to work on his project “Theme Planet” that he’s been working on for the past five years in his spare time. Michael has won several awards including awards from CG Talk, 3d Total, and a CGC Award, many articles have been written about Michael and many publications have used his art work. I first learned about Michael about four years ago and was impressed with his character designs and animation skills. It was really a pleasure to interview Michael for Spin Quad Entertainment.

SQ – Tell us a little bit about yourself, where were you born? When did you become interested in art or computers?
I was born in Graz, a city in Austria. There I attended an Art School and after my graduation I started to work as freelance computer artist.
I was always interested in Comics and when I was younger I wanted to become a Comic artist.
I think my first contact with computer graphics was Deluxe Paint on the Amiga a few years before.
From those days on I worked more and more with the computer to create my images and a few years later I started to create 3d Art.
SQ – Tell us a little bit about your background in 3D? I started as freelance Computer Artist after school.
A few years later I moved to Vienna and started to work as computer game artist for Neo Software.
There I had to learn how to use the Power Animator because we needed 3d rendered content for the first game I worked on, Prototype (A vertical scrolling Shoot em Up)
This is about 10 years ago and since then I specialized more and more on 3d Graphic.
SQ – Where do you work at the moment and what’s your position there? Since about a year now I work as freelance 3d Artist.
The 10 Years before, I worked in the computer game industry, the last 5 years as lead Artist.
SQ – What tools do you use? I mainly use Maya for all my work.
