When I first saw Michael Kutsche’s art I was totally in awe of his talent. A traditional artist at heart Mr. Kutsche still gets his hands dirty using pencils, ink and oil paint and is equally talented using Photoshop, Painter and 3D software. Michael Kutsche is an award winning conceptual artist/ illustrator and 3D artist living in Berlin, Germany who has worked for the VFX industry since 1998. His experiences range from art director and animating commercials and music videos to lead designer for feature film projects. His clientele is impressive with companies like Sega, The Creative Assembly, Sony Ericsson, BWM and Fiftyeight3D to name but a few. Michael Kutsche is an amazingly talented artist and it was my pleasure to interview him for SpinQuad Entertainment.

SQ – First off, please tell us a little about yourself? I was born in Berlin, Germany in 1977. Drawing has been a passion to me since my childhood. I love Arts as well as comics and I’m also interested in philosophy and science. I’m a selftaught artist, I never studied arts or design, I’m proud of going my own, unique way.

SQ – When and how did you become involved in 3D? I did my first steps into 3d at the age of 17 with a very basic 3d tool called Corel Dream 3d, by the time I was thrilled by the idea of bringing my characters to life after my friend gave me a vhs tape with some 3d animated shorts. Shortly after I left school I quickly got a Job at a small 3d company, where I had the opportunity to create music videos and commercials, being involved in the whole process from the initial sketch to the final animation and rendering. Since some years I’m mainly concentrating on concept art and illustration, but 3d has since then influenced the way I draw, it’s very helpful to have a strong background in the 3d production process.

SQ – Where do you work at the moment and what’s your position there? I’m a freelancer since 3 years now and that’s a lot more exciting for me, there’s a lot of interesting projects I couldn’t work on if I was a full time employee.

SQ – What are you working on now or what are some projects that you have worked on recently? Right now I’m doing concept art for a movie project, a next gen game project and some cover artwork is also on the schedule. In my spare time I’m working on my large scale oil paintings for an exhibition here in Berlin.

SQ – What do you feel you’re best known for? I think I’m best known for the magazine cover artwork I did for SEGA/The Creative Assembly’s Total War titles.
